Ethosomes

Ethosomal drug delivery system is non-invasive and delivers the drug to the deep skin layers to the systemic circulation. They are soft, malleable vesicles composed mainly of phospholipids such as phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, ethanol (relatively high concentration) and water, possessing a wide range of sizes from tens of nanometres to microns. Drug delivery can be modulated by altering alcohol:water ratio. In detail, some preferred phospholipids are soya phospholipids and high concentration of alcohol (20-45%) in the formulation provides soft, flexible characteristics and stability to the vesicles and it also disrupts lipid bilayer structure of the skin results in an increase in the membrane permeability.
